This article does not discuss the actual implementation of CMP as it is currently used at sites that have hardware and software that use this technology, and the hardware platform that it is used on is not well explored either. The ES7000 systems that employ this technology can have up to 64 processors installed and they are most often used in one of two schemes, one as a large server in client server environments, the other as a mainframe replacement that can interface with client server networks without the need of protocol conversion hardware. This is a vast leap in technology over traditional mainframe computers that need some form of intermediate software and/or hardware to be accessible to end user clients, and at the same time may eliminate the need for racks of individual servers in some situations because it allows the functional access of clients to the DASD and SAN located data resources while centralizing the software resource used to process that data. These systems can also be used to emulate the old batch processing environments that traditionally have been the strength of mainframe computing, and allow the use of legacy software in both applications programs and operating systems, which is attractive to organizations that have large capital investment in these types of systems. This also makes conversion to the client/server model easier for these organizations because they can continue operating the way they have been without the need for abandoning their familiar systems for the unknown. When these systems are implemented in this way, there is no loss of expertise in the support staff, merely an addition of any required support staff to sustain the client/server environment. This allows the conversion of operations to proceed gradually without the need to encounter problems that may cause service outages for the organization and can be disruptive to the continuity of the ongoing process of doing business.UnisyCE 13:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
