A bot (short for robot) is an automated or semi-automated computer program that performs repetitive editing tasks. They are especially valuable when the number of edits required is too large for human editors to reasonably make them.

Contacting bot operators

Bots have already been developed for many common tasks, such as adding replacing all instances of one template with another, adding a template to a list of pages, or delivering a newsletter. Requests can be made at Wikipedia:Bot requests to have a bot operator

The Bot owners' noticeboard can be used to discuss technical aspects of bots, or to get the attention of bot operators. Relevant discussion can also be found at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical).

Creating a bot

See Wikipedia:Creating a bot

If you would like to write your own bot, you should first read the Wikipedia:Bot policy and make sure that your idea is not listed at Wikipedia:Bots/Frequently denied bots. Bots can be written in many programming languages. Writing a bot from scratch is a relatively technical process, but there are Wikipedia:Bots/Bot frameworks

Before it can run on its own, a bot need to be approved, via Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval.
