[edit] Name origin

What does the name Cayenne mean? 68.40.65.164 00:43, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

One likely source is that it was named after Caïenne, one of the sons of the Galibi Indian chief Cépérou from whom Lieutenant-General Poncet de Brétigny (on behalf of French King Louis XIII) acquired the land on which the city lies (in 1643). Reference this link to a book by Jean-Michel Lemaire. Indirectly, I think that the French word la caïenne originally referred to some kind of stove. Backspace 07:00, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
