Caucasian Front (Soviet Union)

The Caucasian Front or Caucasus Front was a military subdivision (Front) of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. This sense of the term is not identical with the more general usage of military front which indicates a geographic area in wartime, although a Soviet Front may operate within designated boundaries.

The Caucasus Front was created on December 30, 1941 as the new designation of the existing Transcaucasus Front. General Lieutenant Dmitri T. Kozlov [Козлов Дмитрий Тимофеевич] was placed in command. It comprised the 44th, 47th, and 51st Armies. On January 28, 1942, the forces transferred to the (new) Crimean Front and the (reestablished) Transcaucasus Military District.
