Cat among the Pigeons: Review
Cat among the pigeons is a novel by Julia Golding and is a story about the slave Pedro’s, fight for freedom. The main Character is Cat, a girl of 12 who is Pedro’s best friend, and it is said that she has a “soft spot” for him.
The story starts off with them rehearsing shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. This play helps the general public to realize what is going on with Pedro and his evil master, the notorious Mr. Hawkins. The book has lots of action with good vocabulary and I would say it is for people from the age of 11- 17.
As I said before the main character is Cat, who is helping her friend Pedro, but she is not alone. They get help from Syd a burly boxer, Lizzie who is royalty with her brother Charlie, the millers (or Quakers) a group of heavenly sisters and Frank who is always for Cats best interest. But, then there are the baddies! We have Mr. Hawkins, Pedro’s master. And Billy Shepherd, Cat’s nemesis. All the characters play their part well and are quite convincing.
As I mentioned before the theme for this book is slavery. A little known fact is that every day almost 3,000 people are shipped off to become slaves – when most people think that slavery has been abolished. Obviously the author is strongly against slavery, making Mr. Hawkins the bad guy and Pedro the good guy. And if she had no opinion on the matter then she would not write a book about the evils still going on in the slavery business.
The time of the story in the book is the late 1800’s where slavery has just been made illegal and Julia uses that type of language from that era.
All in all, I would give this book 9.5/10 stars because is enjoyable and still puts forward the main evil of slavery.
