AfD works well 99.9% of the time. GNAA and Daniel Brandt are rare exceptions. We will never find a system that works 100% of the time.
I'm not a huge PROD booster, on the other hand. If the deleting administrators left better edit summaries I'd be less opposed, but they don't, and I hate coming across a deleted page and having no idea why it was deleted. I understand its there because it is supposed to reduce the load on AfD, but I'd rather get consensus for almost everything we can.
As for Speedy Deletion, my only problem is that people misuse the criterion that says that you can speedy delete if the article makes no assertion of notability. If an article makes an assertion of notability, even if its crappy (local radio DJ; unknown band signed to a minor label, etc) it should go through AfD.
If you are wondering how I can possibly patrol so many pages so quickly, I work the backlog - un-patrolled pages an hour older or more - and open 25 pages in tabs at a time. Many new pages are obviously keepers, and I tag in a few seconds. Many others need cleanup tags of some sort, these pages take maybe a minute. What takes the longest is deciding to tag a page for deletion. The actual tagging is sped significantly up by Twinkle. When I mark a page as patrolled, I use Ctrl-Tab to move to the next one while Wikipedia is thinking.
If a total of 8 hours a day were dedicated to New Page Patrolling in this manner by all Wikipedians combined, Wikipedia would never have a new page backlog.
