Roger Casement plaque on a guest-house in Riederau, a small village on the Ammersee lake in Bavaria sw. of Munich, which commemorated his stay there during the Summer of 1915. The text translated:
Resided here in Summer 1915
Sir Roger Casement
a martyr for Ireland's freedom
a wholehearted friend
of Germany in difficult times.
He sealed the love
of country with his blood.
Around 1980 I had occasion to visit the village of Riederau on the Ammersee (lake) west of Munich where Casement lived in 1915. The house where he resided had a plaque to commemorate his stay. The image is all my own work, taken by me User:Osioni. The proprietor remembered Casement well and said he acted as his personal page at the time. A picture of Casement still hung on the wall of the room he occupied.
Casement was a close friend and associate of Dr. Manfred Curry who ran a private clinic nearby and with whom he deposited all his personal papers before departing for Ireland. I was given the opportunity to peruse through them. Casement had kept detailed records of meetings, conversations and correspondence. I was astonished to read one such draft or transcript of a letter to the leadership of the IRB which clearly advised on postponing any intended rebellion until German aid was forthcoming. Astonished because "official" history of the time claimed he returned to Ireland to support an insurrection.
The family had earlier offered them to the Irish government, but the offer was declined. I learnt some years later that a member of the Curry family travelled to Dublin and deposited his papers in the National Archives.
Before Casement left Germany he also arranged for the publication in February 1916 of his book Gesammelte Schriften. Irland, Deutschland und die Freiheit der Meere und andere Aufsätze by Joseph Huber Verlag, Diessen vor München.
