| Description |
Intersubband optical transitions within a quantum cascade structure. Electrons emit a photon as they transfer to a lower energy level. The electron tunnels to the next period of the structure and the process repeats. Real quantum cascade devices are more complex than this structure, as they may employ several quantum wells in each period. In a quantum cascade laser, population inversion may be achieved by "draining" electrons from the lower laser state by non-radiative scattering. |
