Casey Stoney

Casey Stoney (born 13 May 1982) is a footballer, currently playing for Chelsea Ladies.

Casey joined Charlton Athletic in the Summer of 2002 in the hope of gaining regular first-team football. She also enrolled at The FA's national football academy – The FA National Player Development Centre at Loughborough University – to combine her studies with a football scholarship.

She led Charlton to success in The FA Nationwide Premier League Cup in March 2004, The FA Women's Cup in May 2005 as Charlton beat Everton 1-0 and most recently the 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the 2006 FA Nationwide Women's Premier League Cup.

Angry at Charlton disbanding their ladies in 2007, Stoney said: "I'm disgusted with the club - the men get relegated and we get punished."

"The club's only trophies in recent years have been won by the women's team - and in the last four seasons we were the only side apart from Arsenal to win major honours.

"Seven weeks ago we played in front of a record crowd at the FA Cup final - that's now our last match and I'm totally gutted for everyone involved on the women's side.

"I just hope that what has happened to us doesn't reverberate around the women's game - otherwise it will be in serious trouble."

In July 2007 she signed for Chelsea ladies along with Charlton teammate Eniola Aluko.

Casey was a member of the talented England U18 squad alongside the likes of Katie Chapman and Rachel Unitt. She immediately made the step-up to regular England squad member and since broken the 50 caps barrier, becoming England's first choice left back in the process.

Casey scored her first senior England goal in the 4-0 victory over Portugal in the Algarve Cup in March 2005, a crisp half volley.

At the end of the 2007/08 season she won the Nationwide International Player of the Year award, ahead of Anita Asante and Alex Scott.
