Carlos Anílber Rivas is an undergraduate student at University of California, Riverside. Described as "random" by many of his peers, Rivas enjoys telling obscure jokes and performing practical jokes that many would not notice. He is known by his seemingly "anti-serious always-happy" personality and his love for sarcasm and satire. An artist at heart, Rivas can paint, draw, photograph, write fiction, and play the piano, guitar and cello but has thus far failed to produce anything noteworthy.

Name
Significance
Rivas was named after his maternal grandfather, Carlos Ruano, and his father's younger brother, Anílber Rivas. He prefers to be called simply Carlos and is known professional as "C.A. Rivas," which he states is an attempt to mimic the initials-only names that many authors are known by (J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, R.L. Stine etc.).
His surname Rivas means "riverbank" in Catalan.
The Grid Complex
One of the most fascinating aspects about C.A. Rivas's name is that it can be arranged in a grid and be read both horizontally and vertically, as shown in the picture to the right. He discovered this in his tenth grade world history class as he was doodling in the margins of the page where he was taking notes. He has stated that this is a complete coincidence and that his parents did not even know about this until he told them.
Chinese
In early 2008 Rivas began to use the Chinese characters "滸男" as his display name on his MySpace page. The former character, 滸, means "riverbank" and the latter character, 男, means "man." This is his attempt to translate his name into Chinese because his last name "Rivas" means riverbank and first name "Carlos" comes from the German for "man."
Rivas obtained an interest for the Chinese writing system upon discovering how beautiful its calligraphy is and how complex learning it is in comparison to Latin-based alphabets.
Background
Rivas's parents immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in the early nineteen-eighties during the Salvadoran Civil War.
Rivas is allergic to cold temperatures and when exposed to them, hives appear all over his skin.
Education
Rivas has always taken education seriously and has excelled in every subject. He began school in September of 1993 at Columbia Elementary School in El Monte, California where he completed Kindergarten. Following a family move to Baldwin Park, California, Rivas transferred to Kenmore Avenue Elementary School where he completed grades one through six. He attended Charles D. Jones Jr. High School for grades seven and eight and subsequently entered Sierra Vista High School where he received his High School Diploma with Valedictorian Honors.
After completing high school in 2006, Rivas entered the University of California, Riverside where he is majoring in Art History and Religious Studies. In his second year there he decided to add English as his second major, because he has always enjoyed literature and thought it a nice companion to his first major. Rivas plans to graduate in June of 2010.
He is also allergic to boring lectures by English professors that tend to ramble on about meaningless things. To avoid the slow dreading-death of pointless lectures, Carlos has created games: replacing movie titles with the word 'pussy', and creating stories about penis dentata.
Beliefs
Religious
Rivas is a strong advocate for religious freedom and tolerance. He believes that humans need religion in their lives in order to be happy, and has stated over and over that people who reject religion are going down the wrong path, a path that leads to loneliness, unhappiness, depression, and misery.
Political
Rivas most strongly identifies with the Democratic Party but since at least March of 2008 he has began to "rethink this position" but has failed to comment or elaborate further than this. Many of his blog posts seem to imply that Rivas is heavily influenced by Marxism as well as anarchism.
Rivas has stated many times that University of California, Riverside, which he attends, is a Marxist institution, which he enjoys immensely.
Social
Rivas is against racism, intolerance of other ethnicities, hate-crimes, etc.
Car
Rivas drives a 1993 third generation Toyota Camry. He has a "University of California, Riverside" decal in the rear window. Rivas was planning to videotape the car's odometer as it reached 200,000 miles but failed to bring the video camera on the day he reached 200,000 and thus witnessed the event alone.
The car is under Rivas's father's name and was purchased in late 2006. There were two previous owners, the first of which attended University of California, Irvine and the second went to Rio Hondo College.
The car has non-functioning Air Conditioning.
Internet Life
Rivas is an active internet user and spends considerable time each day updating his sites. He has stated many times that computers and the internet are threatening human society and are "turning everyone into zombies." He has also stated that he hopes to one day completely break free from the internet and never have to use computers (or cellphones) again, but is currently unable because of the amount of homework and school related work he has to do online.
MySpace
Rivas has been on MySpace since the Summer of 2004. Rivas is known for having a "silent" page because he does not add songs to his profile, since he knows no one listens to them anyways. He refuses to waste his time changing the song.
Rivas obtained a Facebook account towards the end of 2007.
Zazzle
Rivas started designing and selling t-shirts, bumper stickers, and hats on Zazzle since early 2008.
Blog
Rivas is the creator of the "The Rivas Report," a mostly news-and-commentary blog where he occasionally posts photographs and journal entries. He tries to incorporate photographs and videos to accompany his postings whenever possible. Some of his postings have caused quite a bit of controversy and when asked about this he simply replied, "I write what I think."
New content is posted on an (almost) daily basis and when Rivas knows he will be unable to post, he writes material ahead of time and uses Blogger's future-dated system so that postings will automatically appear on the next day.
In mid-May of 2008, Milieu Graye became a writer for The Rivas Report. He one day hopes to include have more writers so that the Blog will have a wider breadth and audience. He is planning on changing the name of the blog so to better reflect the various writers.
Novel
Rivas is writing a novel which he has tentatively titled, Alien, Residing in a Foreign Land. Rivas wishes the novel's contents to be secret but the basic plot will be that of a space explorer who crash lands on an uncharted planet that coincidentally has life and primitive civilization. The novel will detail the space explorer's terror as he witnesses the planet's numerous wars, famines, plagues, and massive global upheaval. Rivas's main influence for this work is Horace Miner.
Rivas also plans to include a melodramatic novella alongside Alien, Residing in a Foreign Land, albeit one that takes place on Earth in the current world. He plans it to be a dumbshow of sorts, with themes that will mirror the larger work.
Awards
Rivas received many awards in the latter half of high school. In 2005 he received "Best in Show" at the ITT Technical Institute Art Competetion, 2nd Place at the Sierra Vista Chalk Art Competition and 2nd Place at the Baldwin Park Women's Club Art Competition. In 2006 he received an award from Sierra Vista's Spanish Department for "Outstanding Student."
Rivas continued his academic success at the University of California, Riverside where he was placed on the Chancellor's Honor List for the 2006-2007 school year by reaching the Dean's List all three quarters of that school year. Rivas also placed on the Dean's list for the Fall and Winter quarters of the 2007-2008 school year.
Criticism
Since at least early 2008, Rivas has declared a personal war against artifice much to the discomfort of many of his friends. Rivas has slowly become 'in your face' about this but finds ways to indirectly criticize people so as to not seem so offensive. Rivas is also critical of people who are against religion and many have labeled him a 'conservative' because of this. Rivas has explained that he believes that people should be allowed to practice "freedom of religion" and that religion "sincerely provides comfort and hope for people."
Rivas is also outspoken against what he calls "passive observers." Rivas condemns passive "observers of life with nothing to say" and considers himself an active participant in politics, government, social issues, etc. He refuses to remain a "zero" and criticizes people who don't vote simply because they want to be "cool" and think themselves smarter and above "the system."
Rivas is a noted critic against Republicans and in early 2008 he received widespread complaints for his stance against Republican Presidential nominee John McCain. Rivas called a McCain "lazy and inadequate for the presidency" who would continue Bush's mistakes. Rivas was especially critical of McCain's plans to stay in Iraq till 2013, leaving fans of the Iraq War outraged.
