[edit] Teaching Sargent
Carolus-Duran seemed to have taught Sargent how to paint "wet-on-wet." It is almost impossible to paint in this manner and produce a naturalistic painting. The wet paint that is being applied becomes mixed with the wet paint that is already on the canvas. In this way, it loses its character. But, Sargent was able to accomplish it.
