Det. Carolyn Barek was a fictional character on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, played by Annabella Sciorra. She was partnered with Det. Mike Logan (Chris Noth), assigned to the Major Case Squad of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Her badge number was 6141.

Barek was a criminal profiler who ascended from the hardscrabble streets of Brooklyn's Cobble Hill to the highest ranks of the NYPD and beyond, spending two post-9/11 years with the FBI. She could speak Polish, Spanish, Italian, Creole, Russian, Cantonese, and Yiddish.

It is mentioned that she has two siblings and that her father worked in or for the carpenter's union. Although no ethnicity was given for the character, the surname "Barek" is Polish.

Barek worked without a partner for some time before she was assigned to work with Logan. This manifested itself in her habit of talking to herself while examining a crime scene.

While far from an idealist, Barek had a deep empathy for victims of poverty and abuse, even if they broke the law. This occasionally created friction between her and Logan, who spares no pity for criminals, regardless of circumstance.

She once spent two years helping a friend overcome a gambling addiction. While the experience soured her on gambling, it taught her a great deal about video poker.

In 2006 (at the end of the fifth season), it was indicated that she may have been transferred to a different department, or reassigned to a new partner. The show gave no reason. She was replaced by Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson).
