Carlotta, California

Carlotta is an unincorporated small town located in Humboldt County, California. Carlotta is about 11 miles (18 km) away from Highway 101. To get to Carlotta, one must exit on Highway 36 from Highway 101 and head east. Official estimates indicate that Carlotta's population is about 300 people. The town is quiet and mostly made up of farmland, rivers, streams, and forests. The main access point to the federally preserved Headwaters Forest is found in Carlotta. The town enjoys wonderful weather, except for occasional winter storms and high wind gusts. It's an area that is isolated from urban California and has experienced little, if any, growth. The nearest airport is the Fortuna airport, about 7 miles (11 km) away.
Carlotta is about 35 miles (56 km) away from Eureka, California. Recently, a local pizza parlor sprung along HWY 36, called "Doc's," which stands for the Drunks of Carlotta Society, according to the locals. Apparently, the location of the current pizza parlor was once a bar, which went out of business.
Carlotta was once home to the famed Carlotta Hotel, notable for the fact that it burned down two times. After burning down for the second time in 1996, the owners decided not to rebuild.

The 1952 movie "Big Trees" starring Kirk Douglas was filmed in Carlotta. Other notable movies filmed in and around Carlotta include "Outbreak" (1995) staring Dustin Hoffman and "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" (1983).

In the state legislature Carlotta is located in the 2nd Senate District, represented by Democrat Pat Wiggins, and in the 1st Assembly District, represented by Democrat Patty Berg. Federally, Carlotta is located in California's 1st congressional district.
