Carlos Alberto Fernandes, (born 18 December 1979 in Kinshasa) is a Portuguese football goalkeeper, who is on loan at Foolad F.C.. In 2006, spanning two different seasons, he played for Steaua Bucharest in Romania, the first ever Portuguese player to have played in Liga I.

[edit] Club career

Prior to joining the squad of Steaua Bucharest at the beginning of 2006, Carlos played for Vilafranquense, Amora, Campomaiorense, FC Felgueiras and Boavista FC, all in Portugal. At Boavista, Fernandes was second choice keeper behind veteran William Andem, but eventually gained first team honors. At Steaua he got disregarded by the fans and even by the man who brought him at the club and repeatedly defended his weak goalkeeping performances, Mihai Stoica, who declared on a TV show that Carlos was one of Steaua's weakest links because he had been put under immense pressure due to the fact of being the team's only foreigner. Steua president Gigi Becali quoted "If any club wants to have Carlos, I will personally pay 100.000 dollars to whomever does that favour to us". In the end, Carlos was released from the club and rejoined Boavista on May 30th 2007, having trained for a time with Charlton Athletic to remain fit.

Carlos started his career as a striker and then discovered his goalkeeping abilities when he replaced an injured team mate.
