The Caristii were a tribe reported by Roman historians in Northern Hispania west of the Deba and east of the Nervion rivers, in modern Biscay and Alava. Their historical territory today corresponds very well with the extension of the Biscainne dialect of the Basque language. The recent discoveries at Iruña-Veleia of the oldest Basque texts known to date [1] confirm that they already spoke Basque in Roman times.
