It deals with the anesthesia aspects of care related to surgical cases such as, but not limited to open heart surgery, lung surgery, and other operations of the human chest.[1][2]The cardiovascular and thoracic (CVT) anesthesiologist keeps the patient "asleep", monitors and controls the patients vital signs during the operation.

[edit] CVT Fellowship
After completing medical school and a residency in anesthesiology formal advanced training in cardiac vascular and thoracic anesthesia is available via a one year fellowship.
[edit] Ultrasound
In addition to the standard advanced medical equipment used, the cardiothoracic anesthesiologist is trained in the use of the transesopheageal echocardiography equipment, or TEE. The TEE machine uses ultrasound waves to acquire real time images of the heart during the operation.[3][4]
