Removing from the main article these assertions that have gone for months without substantiation. Please return to article when source can be provided.
However, series creator Gene Roddenberry later stated that Pike was indeed a captain and that the generic rank insignia was an effort to demonstrate that all Enterprise crewmembers are astronauts first, and officers second; therefore specific rank insignia was unimportant[citation needed].
