[edit] Summary
Captain John. The leader of the Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes. Captain John was a chief of Yosemite Indians. He went by the names Shibana and Poko Tucket (Horse Eater). He was one of the last great historic chiefs of Yosemite.
Captain John was reportedly the young chief who threw the rock on Chief Tenaya. Killing Tenaya for the betrayal of the Ahwahnees for stealing the horses of the Mono Lake Paiutes. Before that incident the Mono Lake Paiutes considered Tenaya one of their own. They had given Chief Tenaya an allotment at Mono Lake after he had left the reservation on the western side of the Sierras.
When Captain John died it was reported in the local newspaper "He killed and cured many".
