Helen 'Star' Mason (Shirley Temple) has been living with Captain January (Guy Kibbee), the lighthouse keeper, since she was an infant. Her parents had perished and Captain January had rescued her. However, a truant officer (Sara Haden) demands that Star be enrolled in boarding school and removed from the care of Captain January.
