Capital Journal is a newspaper in Pierre, South Dakota.
The Capital Journal, founded in 1881, serves the areas of Pierre and Fort Pierre in South Dakota. The Capital Journal was founded by the Hipple family and remained in the family until 2005 when the paper was purchased by Wick Communications of Sierra Vista, Arizona.
In February 2008, the newspaper is preparing for a transition as a new publisher is expected to be announced later in the month. Russ Cannon was the former publisher since 2005 and has been transferred to a Wick Communications newspaper in Rio Rancho, N.M.
On Feb. 21, 2008, editor Andrew Cutler leaves the newspaper to take on a new job as sports editor at the Rapid City Journal, in Rapid City, S.D.
Associate editor Rebecca Cruse will become acting editor until the new publisher hires a permanent news editor, which is expected to happen within the next two months.
