Illustration of a system of interest S outlined in blue, immersed in a heat bath S' outlined in red. The combination of the two constitutes the entire system S* (outlined in green). It is customary to illustrate the system of interest being completely surrounded by the heat bath, but for clarity, it has been shown towards the side. Were this not the case, it is not immediately obvious that the entire system S* and the heat bath S' are different.
