Canyon News, located in Beverly Hills, California is one of the first newspaper in Los Angeles to maintain a declaration of principles which forbids any political bias. The weekly newspaper is published every Sunday and covers the areas of Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Griffith Park, Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon, Los Feliz, Malibu, Melrose, Mulholland, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Topanga Canyon, Westwood & West Hollywood.
Canyon News began on August 1, 2001 in the writing room of a Laurel Canyon house that once belonged to Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth in the 1940s. Winter Kelly, founder of Canyon News claims to have developed the idea after moving into the room at 3:00 in the morning. Two weeks later, the first issue published and "it was all magic since", states the founder.
The newspaper is driven by a firm set of Declaration of Principles:
We promise to: (a) Provide a community newspaper that tells all the news honestly without any political agenda, slant or spin; (b) Allow commentary writers the freedom to express their opinions and views without interruption, censorship, or persuasion; (c) Provide members of the community (rich or poor) with the truth and a place to voice their concerns; (d) Abstain from printing anything demeaning, calumniatory or potentially harmful to any living being; and (e) Maintain the highest level of journalistic integrity.
