Cane River

Cane River is a 35-mile long lake formed from a portion of the Red River that is located in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. There are mixed Creole people who originated in this region.
Among those who lived on the lake was the nationally-known outdoorsman Grits Gresham, host (with Curt Gowdy) of ABC's The American Sportsman from 1966-1979 and author of numerous books and columns on hunting, fishing, and guns.
'Cane River (2001, ISBN 0-446-67845-7) is a novel by Lalita Tademy chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection. The book is about a line of four female slaves, Elisabeth, Suzette, Philomene, and Emily, each the daughter of the previous woman. The novel relates the stories of each woman.
The late Natchitoches Mayor W. Ray Scott named his insurance business "Cane River Insurance".
