[edit] Candlestick Park tornado
The Candlestick Park tornado struck central Mississippi and western Alabama on March 3, 1966.[1] The storm is named for the Candlestick Park Shopping Center in the southwest part of Jackson, Mississippi, which was completely destroyed.[2] After passing through Jackson, leaving F5 damage in its wake, the storm (probably a very intense tornado family) left a nearly continual damage path over 200 miles (322 km) long across seven Mississippi and three Alabama counties, causing 58 fatalities and 518 injuries before dissipating northeast of Tuscaloosa.[3] The author Lorian Hemingway has documented the devastation of South Jackson by the Candlestick Park Tornado in her 2002 book "A World Turned Over".[4]
