Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is a private Mennonite university located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that awards three and four-year degrees in a variety of programs. The university offers classes in three different settings: its main campus in southwest Winnipeg, its downtown campus at Menno Simons College, and a one-year international certificate program with training in Canada and Guatemala or South Africa.

Canadian Mennonite University was formed through the almagamation of three different colleges: Canadian Mennonite Bible College, Concord College (formerly Mennonite Brethren Bible College), and Menno Simons College. While the colleges were involved in cooperative projects as far back as 1945, it was not until 1980 that an amalgamation project was seriously discussed.

The process for creating one Mennonite university in Manitoba began in the 1990s. A fourth college, Steinbach Bible College, was also involved, but later withdrew. In 1998, the provincial government awarded a charter to the Mennonite College Federation, and for the next two years the three colleges worked towards offering cooperative post-secondary programs. The name Canadian Mennonite University was formally announced in early 2000 and classes began in September of that year on a new campus, comprised of the campus of Canadian Mennonite Bible College on the south-west corner of Grant and Shaftesbury and the former campus of the Manitoba School for the Deaf, located on the north-west corner of the same intersection.

[edit] Seminary programs

An arrangement with other graduate schools allows students to take one of two seminary programs from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Winnipeg on the CMU campus.

[edit] Winnipeg Centre for Ministry Studies

This program is a cooperative effort of Mennonite colleges across Manitoba as well as colleges in California and Indiana. Anabaptist introductions to biblical studies, theology, history and ethics, and practical theology are offered to ministry candidates from any denomination.

[edit] Winnipeg Theological Consortium

This program, formed in 1988, allows students from across Winnipeg to earn a Master of Divinity degree while attending another university. The program has three sub-divisions: congregational ministry, pastoral care and counseling, and theological studies.

[edit] Outtatown

Outtatown is an approximately six-month discipleship school where students travel to various locations around the world. Over the first three months, students travel all over Western Canada. After the Christmas break, students travel to Guatemala or South Africa depending on the program that they've chosen. It was formerly called the School of Discipleship.

The University is represented by the CMU Blazers in hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Teams play in the Central Plains Athletic Conference (CPAC) and the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA).
