I suggest that List of theaters and campaigns of World War II be merged into this. There is great merit in having an overview of a complicated and sprawling subject Roger 08:31, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

The Theatres and Campaigns needs to be split into two articles and categories--mrg3105 mrg3105 04:05, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I disagree with the merger. I see no point in this article as there are articles that cover each independent campaign and they can be found via the article List of theaters and campaigns of World War II. There are several issues here that were discussed with Kirill and in the MilHist main talk on category restructuring.

Essentially the concept of theatre is not well defined in published works. In the list, the theatres are shown as:

2.1 European Theatre
2.2 Pacific Asian Theatre
2.3 Middle East Theatre
2.4 Mediterranean Theatre
2.5 African Theatre
2.6 Naval wars
2.7 Strategic Air Campaigns

However, this is woefully inadequate. A military theatre is any large area of strategic significance that requires separate planning command to execute operations. As an example, the Operation Torch landings in North Africa, Although located in theory in the North African theatre, were completely separate from the operations of the Commonwealth forces in North East Africa (what the British General Staff called Middle East since the First World War). The coordination of naval movements, logistics and air support made the operation distinctly separate from the North East African theatre, and created the North West African theatre for the Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian campaigns. Not only that, but the naval operations of the campaign were conducted in the Mid-Atlantic ocean, an area of naval operations entirely separated from the operations, objectives and forces operating in the North-Atlantic threatre of naval operations. I made a suggestion in the Second World War talk in introducing a greater number of theatres that reflect operations and campaigns in those geographic ares, but this was not supported because research in Wikipedia currently lacks on linking forces command echelons to them, largely due to predominance of Allied POV of the operations. In any case, I incorporated the list into the Theatre (warfare) article, and it remains one more atricle to expand and define for others to use as a guideline. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrg3105 (talk • contribs) 22:28, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
