[edit] Summary

Armorial bearings are granted to the councils of the county, and not to the county in general. This means that they can only be used by the council itself, who cannot allow another body or individual the use of their arms. However, many county councils have an additional heraldic badge which they can licence organisations associated with the county to use. A badge is part of the armorial bearings and is usually derived from the arms. It is however a separate bearing in its own right and is never displayed in shield form nor integrated with other emblems. The accepted practice is that it is permissible to illustrate the arms of a county council subject to copyright of the illustrator. In this case they should be clearly labelled as the arms of the county council.
