Description

Wrong way and one-way en:traffic signs at the Ventura Boulevard off-ramp from the northbound en:San Diego Freeway in en:Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, California.

This sign arrangement is installed by en:Caltrans on both sides of all en:California en:freeway off-ramps to discourage wrong-way drivers. Because this arrangement is not in compliance with the en:Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the American federal government will not pay for installation of these signs, so Caltrans has to pay for them. en:Georgia (U.S. state) and en:Virginia have since copied this arrangement.

Notice how the signs are clustered together and are placed close to the ground; this is a deliberate design decision to attract the attention of en:drunk drivers.

Note how the signs appear to be slightly battered and bent. Many road signs in California often have a battered appearance, either because they have been hit in car accidents or blown away by strong winds.
