Cadwaldr (Jim Cadwell) is an American Wikipedian. He was born on December 3, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

[edit] Early Life

He attended Marcy Open elementary school in Southeast Minneapolis from kindergarten through 6th grade, and later attended Marcy's middle school at its present location, adjascent to Holmes Park in Minneapolis.

Cadwell later attended Patrick Henry High School in North Minneapolis. There, he was active in the Student Government in his freshman year, but grew somewhat apathetic about school in general in the following years. In 1997, he transferred to South High School, where he spent his senior year. At South he very much enjoyed studying Latin, and due to his varied interests, he had a fair knowledge of general trivia, and was thus recruited to the Quizbowl team.

[edit] College Education

Cadwell attended Minneapolis Community and Technical College for two years, taking mostly general education courses, including creative writing and Spanish. In his second year, he enrolled in the Cabinetmaking program, in which he did fairly well, but he was eventually suspended for a year, because of poor grades in other courses.

The following fall, he enrolled in the Cabinetmaking program at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, where he completed much of the two year course of study and produced a number of fine furniture pieces. Cadwell failed, however, to earn a diploma, because he saw little point to many of the other courses that were required.

[edit] Cetera

As he was not particularly interested in professional cabinetmaking, Cadwell never pursued a career in that field, and was thus rather aimless in the first few years after leaving school.

In 2004, Cadwell's friend Don Allan proposed a business arrangement in which Allan would be a general construction contractor, and would hire Cadwell. This worked fairly well, and Cadwell did some general repair, maintenance, and painting work on several houses in Saint Paul.

[edit] Chile

It was while he was doing this work that Cadwell met ornithologist Steve McGehee, who told him about the work he was doing on the island of Navarino in southern Chile. Cadwell was fascinated, and resolved to go to the island that winter to assist McGehee in his research.

Cadwell saved as much money as he could, and departed for Santiago, Chile on December 15, 2004. From Santiago, he travelled by bus to Punta Arenas, and thence by ferry to Puerto Williams, arriving on the evening of December 23.

In addition to assisting McGehee, Cadwell worked on improving hiking trails in Omora Ethnobotanical Park, building small bridges and putting stairs into steep hillsides.

One of Cadwell's more memorable experiences was participating in the second-ever ornithological expedition above the tree line in the Andes. Cadwell, McGehee, and some others, climbed Cerro RĂ³balo, and set up mist nets to catch birds that have rarely been studied, such as the yellow-bridled finch, and the dark-faced ground-tyrant.

[edit] Truck Driving

After returning to Minnesota, Cadwell enrolled at the Transportation Center for Excellence, a truck driver training school in Eagan. After completion of training and acquisition of his class A commercial driver's licence, Cadwell took a job with Werner Enterprises in Omaha, Nebraska. He drove for Werner for about a year, travelling to 41 of the 48 contiguous states, resigning in June 2006. His resignation was due in part to dissatisfaction with the job, but also to the fact that he wished to return to Chile. This plan was not to be, however, as McGehee was not going to return to Chile, instead enrolling at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, to work on his Ph.D. degree.

[edit] Cetera Ceterorum

Since quitting truck driving, Cadwell has not seriously sought employment, and has spent much of his time making videos on YouTube and editing various Wikipedia articles, occasionally doing the odd woodworking project. He has also been active as a member of his church, Pilgrim House Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, serving on the Board of Directors as a member of the Building and Welcoming Congregations Committees.
