[edit] History

Cabana Cachaca, a luxury artisanal pure cane rum from Brazil, was launched in the United States in 2006 by Matti C. Anttila, a socially prominent New York investment banker turned spirits entrepreneur. Although the third most distilled spirit in the world, cachaça, the national spirit of Brazil, was relatively unknown in the United States until recently. After determining there was no widely-available premium brands of cachaça in the American market, Anttila found a cutting-edge Brazilian distiller outside of Sao Paulo and set out to create and market his new product. Beginning with a kickoff at the exclusive New York nightclub Bungalow 8, the brand soon made headlines as many of Anttila's celebrity and socialite friends including Jordana Brewster, Damon Dash, Tinsley Mortimer, Ted Roosevelt V, Amanda Hearst, and Griffin Dunne developed a taste for caipirinhas and other innovative cocktails made with Cabana. Introduced in New York in June, 2006, Cabana was released in Florida in December, 2006, along with a variety of other key American east coast markets. Cabana completed its key market national roll-out in 2008 by signing a national distribution deal with Southern Wine & Spirits, the largest spirits wholesaler in the country. In June, 2007 Cabana launched in the United Kingdom, its first European market. Domestically in Brazil, Cabana is sold at exclusive locations in both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, including the Fasano Hotel.

[edit] Production

Cabana is distilled directly from the first pressing of freshly hand cut sugar cane, as opposed to molasses, which most rum is produced from. Utilizing a pioneering production method, Cabana successfully eliminates the impurities responsible for cachaça’s sometimes harsh taste, without compromising any of the spirit’s unique characteristics. Two small-batch distillations of the fermented natural cane juice in pot stills – as opposed to the large column stills used for continuous distillation by most producers – allow the master distiller greater control over each distillate. After six months of mellowing in neutral oak barrels, the resulting spirit is artisanal white rum in its purist, most luxurious form, offering a delicate citrus nose and a smooth round finish.

Quality and consistency of every batch of Cabana is overseen by the master-distiller and is subject to rigorous standards of quality control unmatched in the cachaça category.

[edit] Awards

Cabana Cachaça captured Silver Medals at the 2006 and 2007 San Francisco World Spirits Competitions and received a 90 point rating by influential spirits critic Anthony Dias Blue.
