[edit] 2006 Season
In his inaugural season as a Clemson Tiger, Spiller made himself known to the Clemson fans. He rushed for 938 yards on 129 carries, even when he was playing behind James Davis.[10] He made an 82 yard touchdown reception against Boston College for his first score as a Tiger. He struggled against Florida State, but then turned it around against North Carolina, running the ball for 58 yards and two touchdowns. His next two games, Louisiana Tech and Wake Forest, were both triple-digit rushing performances for Spiller. He ran 127 yards on 15 carries
against Louisiana Tech to break the 100-yard barrier and then scored a critical touchdown against Wake Forest on a 72 yard breakaway and finished with 104 yards on 9 carries.[11] He scored twice more against the Temple Owls with a 73 yard performance. He then made amazing moves in the Georgia Tech game with a 50 yard swing pass score and a 50 yard rushing touchdown. He would finish with another
triple digit rushing performance with 116 yards on 16 carries. Then in the losses to Virginia Tech and Maryland, he finished with 41 yards in each game. Rebounding from the past two losses, he rushed for 154 yards on 18 carries in the Textile Bowl and led Clemson to escape North Carolina State. In the loss to South Carolina, he showed off his speed on an 80 yard touchdown run. He ended up with 155 yards.
Spiller ended up being named a first team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News.[12]
