I recall this, but it needs citation. Invalids in the 19th century were commonly bloated not by obesity but by dropsy - massive fluid retention from heart failure, which was a condition untreatable until digitalis was discovered. Gordonofcartoon 18:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
