Butterworth (population 108,000) is the principal town of Province Wellesley (often known by its Malay name of Seberang Perai) in the state of Penang in Malaysia. Butterworth is the site of the Malayan Railway station for Penang, and is linked to the island by the Penang Ferry Service and by the 13.5 km Penang Bridge (Jambatan Pulau Pinang in Malay).
A point of tourist interest in the town is the Taman Burung Pinang (Penang Bird Park), a landscaped park with over 300 species of birds from all over Southeast Asia.
One of the best schools in Penang are located here . One of them is SMK Dato'Onn (Butterworth). The school pupils are specially selected by the Education Ministry after the UPSR examination.The school produces good results.The school has minimal discipline problem.
Butterworth is also the site of a Royal Malaysian Air Force airbase formerly operated by the British RAF and the Royal Australian Air Force, and is now the Headquarters of the Integrated Area Defence System of the Five Power Defence Arrangements.
Butterworth's bus service is now upgraded.RapidPenang has done dramatic changes.Butterworth is getting a new jetty (Penang Sentral) & monorail service.
