Talk:Buran Origin of Death

[edit] Notability
How is this not notable? It's a documented mythological story from the Buran people. It's covered in college-level classes. Also, I have cited a primary source. Daniel Musto (talk) 23:12, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
- I added the tag, which includes the line "If you are familiar with the subject matter, please expand or rewrite the article to establish its notability." (BTW your source is a secondary source, which is actually preferable to a primary source in Wikipedia policy). I am not familiar with the subject, so I approached the article in total ignorance and finished it with little extra knowlegde. My questions are as follows:
- who are the Buran people? Wikipedia has no article about them; this makes any subsidiary details about them less notable. Maybe add an article about them; at least, where in Africa do they live, what is their social structure, technology level, interaction with Western society, degree of study by anthropologists, numbers, origins, current practices.
- How important is this story to them? Is it by far their most important myth, or just one of many? Does it have religious significance, or impact their daily lives?
- You list one source, which I do not have access to. Are there other texts which refer to this myth, or just this one text? Is it a stock example used by many lecurers, or just those using this one book?
- If it is often referred to, why is this:
- is it because it is an archetypal example of a class of myths;
- if so, what class of myths? What other cultures have such myths? Can you link to other articles?
- is it, on the other hand, because it is such an unusual myth, either across all cultures or given the type of culture that the Buran have?
- If so, does this exceptionality have implications for theoretical frameworks of mythology or anthropology?
- is it because it is an archetypal example of a class of myths;
- Basically, at the moment, the article describes one myth of one culture; there are thousands of cultures, each with thousands of myths: why does this one deserve a Wikipedia article? I don't suggest all the preceding questions must be answered for the article to establish notability, but at least some should be. Regards, jnestorius(talk) 20:53, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
