Burton E. Sweet

Burton Erwin Sweet (December 10, 1867 - January 3, 1957) was a U.S. Representative from Iowa.
Born on a farm near Waverly, Iowa, Sweet attended the common schools and the Iowa State Normal School at Cedar Falls. He was graduated from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1893 and from the law department of the University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1895. He was admitted to the bar in 1895 and commenced practice in Waverly, Iowa. City solicitor of Waverly 1896-1899. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1900-1904. He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1904. He served as member of the Republican State central committee 1902-1906.
Sweet was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1915-March 3, 1923). He did not seek renomination in 1922, having become a candidate for Senator. He was an unsuccessful candidate for United States Senator in the Republican primary election of 1922 and again in 1924. He resumed the practice of law. He died in Waverly, Iowa, January 3, 1957. He was interred in Harlington Cemetery.
