[edit] Location
The station is located at the eastern end of the Burnley Street road overpass and next to Madden Grove. Tram route 70 is a short walk from the station. Popular Melbourne live music venue, The Central Club, is also close to Burnley Station.
[edit] Facilities
The station consists of four platforms, all four in an island format. Platforms 1&2 contain a large brick building, and serve passengers travelling towards the city, while platforms 3&4 contain a small weatherboard building and service the lines heading out towards Alamein, Glen Waverley, Belgrave and Lilydale. Burnley is the junction for the Glen Waverley line; the last station at which it is possible to transfer from the outgoing Alamein/Belgrave/Lilydale lines to the Glen Waverley service.
Large Metcard machines are located at the entrances to platforms 1&2 and platforms 3&4, which are able to dispense most ticketing options available, and accept notes, coins and electronic swipe card payment from a savings or cheque account. In addition, an office between platforms 1 and 2 is manned on weekday mornings.
Stabling facilities are located at the DOWN end of the station, adjacent to the Glen Waverley line, whilst a subway is located underneath the station.
Both platforms can be accessed via Burnley Street and Madden Grove. A second subway is located beneath the tracks at the east end of the platforms, level with Stawell Street. This subway merely offers a thoroughfare beneath the tracks and does not actually connect to the station.
[edit] History
Burnley station opened on Saturday, 1st May 1880 as Burnley Street. It was later renamed to Burnley in 1882.
