Buka Barana

Buka Barana (also written in Kurdish as as: Bûke barane) literally meaning the bride of the rain; is a traditional hand-made doll with a female face, used by Kurdish children (girls) to ask for rain. Children carrying the doll across the the region, sing some folclore poems; other people in turn respond with pouring some water over the doll. This tradition which is performed during seasons when people need raining, has roots in Kurdish mythology and culture.

A poem sung by the girls can often begin with:

Buke barane awî dewê
derzî gewre kichanî dewê...
