- Brunswick (or German: ''Braunschweig''), a historically important former dukal capital city in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located north of the Harz mountains at the farthest navigable point of the Oker river, which connects to the North Sea via the rivers Aller and Weser. It was one family seat of the ancient house of the dukes of Brunswick-Luneberg, who later became the Hanovarian kings of Great Britain. Like Hanover to its west, it acted as a crossroads city important in the east-west land trade skirting the Harz and connecting to the riverine systems in the northern German plains.
