Madness Combat is a Flash cartoon series created by Matt "Krinkels" Jolly.

The series centers around a character named Hank J. Wimbleton along with other characters known as Jesus Christ and Tricky the Clown.

It is distinguished by its unique style of animation; every character in the series is drawn simplistically, the primary color is gray, and facial features are replaced by a cross on each character's face. This is a common technique used in portraiture. Usually it is only used for sketching out the design, however, and not left in the final piece. Leaving these lines in is a unique part of the Madness Combat series.

The series' other distinguishing trait is its violence. People are attacked and killed in almost every way possible over the course of the series, and are often brought back as zombies by Jesus. In addition, Hank is killed at the end of almost every animation. Despite this, the series is largely played for laughs.

[edit] Characters

There are three main characters in the series and several secondary characters.

Hank J. Wimbleton
Hank is the main character in the Madness Combat series, having first appeared in the original Madness Combat cartoon. He appears to be exceedingly well-trained in the lethal arts, being an expert marksman and a skilled hand-to-hand fighter. In Madness Redeemer, he was revealed to be hunting "The Sheriff"; he successfully killed him in Madness Avenger, where after his goals are unknown (though some believe he hunts after "Jesus" and sometimes "Tricky"). To date, Hank has "died" a total of six times.

Jesus, in the intro to Episode 5

Jesus Christ
The primary antagonist until the end of Depredation, he first appeared in Episode 1. In the early episodes, he works for the Sheriff, but following the Sheriff's death in Madness Avenger he seems to be independent. Jesus possesses many supernatural abilities, including levitation, the ability to ward off bullets, and the power to resurrect people from the dead as zombies. He was also Hank's most dangerous opponent, having killed him four out of the six times Hank has died. To date, Jesus has "died" a total of 5 times.

Image:Depredation Tricky.PNG
Tricky, in the intro to Episode 5

Tricky the Clown
Tricky is named after an Internet meme popular at the time, known as xkittykittymeowmeow, which consists of a clown with an exposed, erect penis dancing to the "Sailor's Hornpipe". Krinkels parodied this by making Tricky Bangbanggooberblat, which consists of Tricky hitting Jesus over the head with his giant penis. This has caused many Christians to send Krinkels hate mail, which he then mocks. Tricky's first appearance was in Madness Redeemer, where he was shot a couple times but survived. Hank killed him in Avenger by impaling him to a giant marshmallow with a stop sign with an exclamation (!) point on it, but he was resurrected, only to be killed again. He returned in Madness Apotheosis, donning a welder's mask and again in Depredation, only to become really compressed. Once more in Antipathy and Consternation, where at the end of Antipathy and almost the entire animation of Consternation was a burning demon.

The Sheriff
Hank's first target, distinguished from the rest of the characters by his black cowboy hat. Hank is first seen hunting down the Sheriff for unknown reasons. The Sheriff is well-guarded, as suits his position, and has both a horde of inept men and the infinitely-more-successful Jesus on his payroll. At the end of Madness Redeemer, Hank is killed by Jesus before he can kill the Sheriff, but he successfully kills both of his foes before dying himself in Madness Avenger. The Sheriff has remained dead since then.

The 1337 agents

The 1337 Crew
A group of Agent Smith-like men in shades and suits, they serve as elite (the name comes from "1337," internet slang for "elite") fighters in their first appearances. Despite being presumably better-trained than normal grunts, they are still slaughtered in large numbers by Hank. In Madness Depredation and Antipathy, almost all characters who aren't Hank, Jesus, or Tricky are members of the 1337 Crew; the opening of Depredation, appropriately, nicknames them "The Victims".

Everyone Else
The bodyguards, employees, and innocent bystanders that are killed by Hank and others throughout the series. Armed with various weapons, they're still no match for the main characters. Some are raised as zombies by Jesus after their death, but still don't have a good survival rate.

[edit] The Animations

To date, there are seven animations in the series:

[edit] Madness Combat

The opening scene of Madness Combat
  • Release date: July 25, 2002

The first of the series, it introduces Hank and Jesus. Hank approaches a man with a boom-box. The man then sucker punches Hank without even looking at him. A brawl develops with passersby, and Hank eventually takes out a gun and begins shooting. Jesus appears, and is killed after a short fight with Hank. As the episode concludes, he retrieves the boom-box from off-screen, shoots a person who is dancing in the background, and begins to dance as the following caption appears: "And so on this day our hero had slain thirty men. And he would later admit to having a good time doing it. (Thirty-two people actually, if you count the zombies.)"

[edit] Madness Redeemer

  • Release date: January 15, 2003

The first of the series to identify its location as "Somewhere in Nevada"; also marks the first appearance of the Sheriff and Tricky, who returns in the later animations. Hank sneaks into the Sheriff's department and chases after him, running into many guards along the way. In the end, he reaches the Sheriff and has him at gunpoint when Jesus shoots him in the back of the head. The episode ends with a caption reading, "Moral: Don't try to shoot the sheriff."

[edit] Madness Avenger

  • Release date: September 9, 2003

Hank, now with bandages around his head, once again hunts the Sheriff down. Partway through, the Sheriff activates the Improbability Drive (from Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), causing insane occurrences, such as a massive marshmallow and a whale falling from above. After the Drive's activation, Hank kills Tricky twice and encounters Jesus. At the end, Hank, armed with a shotgun, corners the Sheriff, only to be run through by Jesus with a sword. He manages to kill both Jesus and the Sheriff before dying himself.

[edit] Madness Apotheosis

  • Release date: June 3, 2004

Hank, now with bandages around his torso and head, hunts down Tricky, who is now working as a DJ at a club. He storms through the club, killing anyone who gets in his way. The clown hunt continues as he descends a short stairway and enters the basement, which is where a rave is in progress. Hank shoots Tricky, making the ravers angry, and they attack him. Hank slices and shoots his way through them as Jesus appears. At the end of the animation, Hank is shot repeatedly by Jesus and a zombie, and sets off an explosive on his body, blowing up himself and Jesus. The final scene shows the clown dancing, with a caption that states, "And he danced."

[edit] Madness Depredation

  • Release date: March 24, 2005

The fifth addition to the series, wherein Hank, now wearing circular red rimless glasses, a mask, a black trench coat (a reference to the movie Léon), with a matching black toque; attacks what might be a stronghold of Jesus. Hank easily manages to take down each bodyguard he meets until Jesus arrives. The fight between the two swings in favor between Hank and Jesus several times until Tricky arrives. Tricky manages to quickly and decisively defeat Jesus and then gets into a short fight with Hank. Despite managing to hold his own for most of the fight, and even gaining the upper hand near the very end, Tricky kills Hank and the captions "OMFG YOU DO NOT KILL CLOWN" and "CLOWN KILLS YOU!" appear as the episode ends. This is a reference to a joke by Yakov Smirnoff known as "In Soviet Russia".

[edit] Madness Antipathy

  • Release date: September 15, 2006

The sixth addition to the series, it follows Hank, now with his bottom jaw missing and bloodied, hunting down Tricky. Hank goes into a club, killing many guards. When Hank gets to the final room, he goes over to the control panel with the Improbability Drive. A steam train driven by Tricky, appears out of nowhere and zooms towards Hank, who dodges it and jumps onto the train which then goes off a cliff. Tricky throws a metal pipe to Hank and they have a brief fight, in which Hank dies, but is quickly resurrected. The two continue to fight until Hank throws Tricky off a cliff. Tricky suddenly respawns as a massive, white, flaming demon. As the screen zooms into Hank preparing for battle, he shoots several times and then the screen goes black with the caption "To be continued", leaving a cliff hanger.

[edit] Madness Consternation

  • Release date: May 3, 2007

Hank's retaliatory attack against the new Tricky was futile; Hank is now lying at the bottom of the cliff, missing half of his head and a portion of his body, and blood soaks the ground beneath him. He tries to get up, even in his current state. Hank is eventually revived, and fights his way through a building to escape Tricky. Along the way, he encounters many 1337 agents, including a gigantic one. At the end of the animation, Jesus appears, killing Hank and Tricky. The camera then pans to a dark, sinister figure.

[edit] Madness Inundation

  • Release date: February 8, 2008

With Hank and Tricky now dead, Jesus is left to be the protagonist. He plunges himself off a cliff and lands near a building, from which 1337 agents exit. Using his newly acquired powers to slaughter every member he comes in contact with, he reaches a room where characters are suspended in pods filled with liquid. Soon enough, the dark, sinister figure (known as "the Auditor") is alerted by an agent that Jesus has damaged an engine-like device in the pod room, to which the Auditor is filled with disgust and grabs a minigun from a nearby closet. As Jesus exits the building, he sees the tower which the Auditor is standing on top of. The Auditor then activates his minigun. In an attempt to dodge the bullets, Jesus dashes from side to side, but at the same time crashing into the building which the Auditor was standing on. When Jesus reaches the room where the Improbability Drive is kept, the Auditor follows and blasts him (and part of the room, as well as the Improbability Drive) with an RPG. The Improbability Drive, now too damaged to work, restores normality, which is characterized and blinding white explosion. The movie then ends with "And then there were none..."
