Talk:Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Do we necessarily want this in Category:New York City Subway? It hasn't been around since 1923, which is why it's in Category:New York City Subway history; that seems like enough. --SPUI (talk) 23:51, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I see your point. What I'm looking for is a way to categorize things directly related to the system that bear on the system but may not be current. The problem is that "New York City Subway" has become a generic term independent of the companies and the physical rights-of-way, just as "elevated" was a generic term in the past. All the former elevated lines also tend to be in the category.
- A better overall category might be "New York City rapid transit" but I suppose people would look first under "...subway" which kinds of bugs me, because "subway" doesn't adequately describe the system as a generic category.
- This same dichotomy of genericness or not of the term "subway" played out in the recent celebrations: "New York City 1904-2004 Subway Centennial" as it says on the MTA website, but they really mean "IRT Subway Centennial" since there are a number of "subway" lines still running that predate the IRT by decades. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 02:11, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
