Brown Island (Massachusetts)

Brown Island, previously known as Crowninshield Island is a small uninhabited island off the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The island consists of many different marine ecosystems, such as a small sandy beach, a field, a small marsh, and a wooded promontory. Several trails run the length of the island, progressing back into the small coniferous promontory. During the summer months the island is a popular retreat for swimmers and boaters alike. The island is reachable by foot during low tide, but during high tide the water is deep enough to anchor yachts and motorboats. The island is reachable from Little Harbor and Grace Olivers Beach by swimming.

The namesake of the island comes from Louise E. du Pont Crowninshield, one of the many pioneers in America's historic preservation movement from 1925 to her death in 1958. She summered at Peach's Point in Marblehead and otherwise resided in Delaware.
