Bright Eyes has been active since before 1998, I believe.
Early years - it says here that the name Bright Eyes comes from Planet of the Apes. Forgive me if I'm being stupid here, and I haven't seen the original 1960s film in a long time, but I remember reading an interview with Conor where he says the name comes from a film where a man keeps calling a girl "bright eyes", and assumed it was the Shirley Temple film, but that was just a guess. Does this actually happen in POTA? Do you think we could add some more detail about the origin of the name?

Should we mention at all that Oberst gets so drunk by the end of most concerts that he forgets words stumbles around etc? Obviously we would have to find an official source, but just about anyone thats been to a concert of his (within the last year for sure) can verify :)
- If you would really like to include it, you could probably check out some concert reviews for a source. Problem is, musicians getting drunk and acting stupid on stage is not exactly unique and most reviewers probably wouldn't think to mention it. Elvrum 19:16, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I've just beefed up the Clear Channel stuff a little, and wondered whether there might be an argument for seperating out things that could broadly be termed as "protest" activities, which would include Clear Channel, MoveOn.org tour, "When The President Talks To God", etc. That "Recent Years" section is just starting to look a little cluttered. --Wastekiller 02:29, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- That's not a bad idea. All this article is so far is a mini-biography without much information about the music, critical reactions, etc. It needs more sections and "Activism" or the like wouldn't be a bad start. Elvrum 03:23, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Bright Eyes isn't an emo band? I'm pretty sure all of his songs are depressing(for some reason i love them, though :p)...but i guess that doesn't count as emo?
Bright Eyes are loved by emo and indie listeners. MCR arent emo, neither are afi. Emo is Mineral, Juliana Theory and Sunny Day Real Estate.

"Emo" in this sense doesn't really mean "emotional music," I mean hell most music is emotional; rather, we mean a genre defined by the likes of AFI and My Chemical Romance. If you think Bright Eyes sounds anything like those two, well, listen again a few times :P - anon.
If you think MCR and AFI define emo, I suggest you listen to more actual emo bands - anon
I agree with the above statement -
MCR are these days the archetypal 'emo' band, AFI I would consider to be more of a goth-punk band. Either way, Bright Eyes is not emo, even with the fringe, lol. It is merely lo-fi folk sort of stuff.

Even if I did count "Emo" as a legitimate genre of music, anyone who has really listened to Bright Eyes could hardly call his music emotional hardcore. Now, I will not contest that Oberst himself is emo, because he is, but I disagree that his music is. Adverse Entropy 01:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

i dont think emo is his genre. i think indie or folk or indie folk is alot better than emo. Emo wouldnt do bright eyes justice. if someone who never heard bright eyes before asked you for bright eyes music stlye and you were to tell them emo, they would get a distorted idea of the band. i think indie folk is a better genere discription. Bright Eyes is not a real emo band. Even trying to fir them in with the post-hardcore indie bands doesn't totally work. The Beatles talked about their emotions, does that make them an "emo" band? Not really. If you want to call them emotionally driven, depressing, whiny, etc. etc., ok. But speaking under musical genres, they're not emo.
And I do tell my friends I listen to emo bands, since that's the technical classification. You're just jumping on the emo dissing bandwagon. Ailes Grises 15:46, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

I pulled out the "This release was the first time that Bright Eyes and Saddle Creek had ever hired a publicist to bring the music to the attention of the media." from the part about Story in the Soil. Holiday Matinee was hired to work press for "Fevers and Mirrors" and the '99 release "Every Day and Every Night." It was also the publicist for The Faint and Cursive before Story in the Soil was released.

I'm a bit confused at the content of the Bright Eyes page on Wikipedia. Under Future Plans it states
"Conor has been married to Cait for nearly three years. She is currently eighteen. They live in Omaha, NE, in his parents' basement, and have five puppies."
Aside from being an odd post (marrying a 15 year old and all), the Conor Oberst Wiki page states (under Trivia) that Conor is "Is romantically involved with fellow Saddle Creek artist Maria Taylor."

I think it would improve the article to explain why Bright Eyes dislikes Clear Channel, and why Clear Channel in particular and not other, similar corporations.

[edit] Digital Ash least impresseive?
In the part of the article concerned with Wide Awake and Digital Ash it states that:
"While both albums were met with success and generally good reviews many die-hard fans felt Digital Ash was a bit too eccentric and find it to be the least impressive Bright Eyes album to date."
May I remove this last editorial comment on Digital Ash? This is purely conjecture and there is no way to quantify such a thing, let alone confirm or disconfirm such a statement. Who are these die-hard fans? Where can I find them? And where can I read a poll of their opinions? I suggest this is an editorial comment by one die-hard fan in particular - in other words it is OR. I just got rid of it... it's completely esoteric, talking at length about the theme from a specific song sandwiched into a general overview of early Bright Eyes. It's out of place and pointless, not to mention, it also seems to be shameless self-promotion, as it was first added by someone using the handle EA2005... coincidentally, the initials to E. Attinger.
