Horse-drawn trams[ were introduced in 1875 but had a maximum speed of 6 mph.
Electric trams were introduced in 1895. At the peak of their use, in 1908, Bristol had 233 in the fleet, running on 31 miles of track. Electricity was picked up from overhead wires, this tram had two GEC 27HP electric motors.
Petrol buses started in 1906, but did not fully take over from trams until the final electric tram service ran in 1939.

(In 2007 the Bristol Industrial Museum was permanently closed for conversion to the Museum of Bristol. The exhibits are in storage.)
