[edit] Summary

This is a digital photo I took myself. It depicts a wood carving of the seal of Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador which is displayed in the Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The town logo was designed in 1985 by Greg Hiscock, of Brigus, at the age of 14. This design was choosen by the Town Council of Brigus, and was selected from several entries submitted by local school children at the time.

The SAILS represent the monument erected at Bishop's Beach, as a memorial to Captain Robert Abram Bartlett. The SCHOONER is represntative of the vessels based in Brigus and used in the Labrador and Grand Bank fisheries, for the annual seal hunt and on several notible expiditions to the Artic Ocean and North Pole. The SEAL recognizes the large and storied history Brigus has in the sealing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. Each spring hundreds of schooners would fill the harbour of Brigus, awaiting their crews, stores and fair weather prior to departing for the annual seal hunt. The Split Salt Cod pays tribute Brigus' long history as a major producer of salted cod, right up until the imposed moratorium on Northern Cod of 1992.

Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador

Portion used

The entire logo is used to convey the meaning intended and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the intended image.

Low resolution?

The logo is a size and resolution sufficient to maintain the quality intended by the company or organization, without being unnecessarily high resolution.

Purpose of use

The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.

Replaceable?

Because it is a logo there is almost certainly no free equivalent. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.

Other information Use of the logo in the article complies with Wikipedia non-free content policy, logo guidelines, and fair use under United States copyright law as described above.
