Category talk:British national museums

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fact that a museum is sponsored - through funding, appointment of trustees, or both -by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport does not automatically make it a "national museum".

Such sponsorship may reflect historical accident (e.g. the inability to agree alternative funding arrangments for bodies "orphaned" by local government reform) or lobbying of the Arts Minister of the day by the original promoters of "failing" institutions requiring a financial bail-out that it would be embarrassing to see go under.
