Brian Tarquin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brian Tarquin is an Emmy Award-winning guitarist/composer is established as a top-rated recording artist & TV composer. In 2003 and 2005, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for a Drama Series[citation needed] and also received Emmy nominations in 2001, 2002 and 2004[citation needed]. He wrote the theme music for MTV's Road Rules, as well as producing music for many other TV shows such as America’s Next Top Model, ABC's Making The Band, Extra, Alias and the Keanu Reeves film The Watcher (see complete list of credits below).

In 1997, the release of This is Acid Jazz, Vol.2 on Instinct Records, which made the Billboard Top 20 Chart[citation needed], was followed by several solo jazz records Ghost Dance, Last Kiss Goodbye, Soft Touch and High Life, which charted Top 10 on NAC radio on R&R Charts[citation needed] in the mid 1990’s.

In 2000, he switched gears and, with Chris Ingram, formed the rock/electronica band Asphalt Jungle, whose debut CD Electro Ave received critical acclaim. It incorporated funky big beats with metallic percussive guitar riffs and featured the MTV Road Rules theme "Witchcraft". It also contained the track "Tinsel Town" which was heard by millions of Making The Band viewers. With a unique style, Asphalt Jungle blended live raw guitar tones with fast paced bottomless grooves. The second release, Enjoy This Trip, successfully charted top 30 on the CMJ charts[citation needed]. Tracks like "Rock the Nation" blend funk and groove laced with phatt guitar licks. The album also includes the chill-out track "Tekken", which first debuted in 1999 as MTV’s Road Rules theme song on one of their luxurious seasons.

In 2006, Tarquin opened his own boutique record label BHP Music, specializing in instrumental guitar music. That same year, he released DJ Soul Slinger’s Classics, Part 1 & Asphalt Jungle’s 3rd installment entitled Junglization, which charted #19 on the CMJ Charts[citation needed].

2007 releases from BHP Music included the acclaimed guitar compilation Guitar Masters, Vol.1, produced and compiled by Tarquin and featuring guitar legends Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Zakk Wylde, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan and many others. The compilation received rave reviews from the editors-in-chief of Guitar Player Magazine[citation needed] and Vintage Guitar magazine[citation needed], who both graciously contributed the liner notes for the compilation. The label then released Bob Marley Remixed, which explored Marley territory with dance grooves intertwined with original Marley vocals and was praised by the editor-in-chief of Mix magazine{{Fact}. If that was not enough, Tarquin also started his own column Guitar Studio in Premier Guitar Magazine, where he is able to share his studio recording techniques with the readers and interview many established guitarists.

Following are some media quotes:

  • "Tarquin’s swoops, dive-bombs, and plain-old riffing are a treat for any rock and soul guitar lover….magnificent rock guitar." Vinatge Guitar[citation needed]
  • "…masterpiece of funk and groove electronica bustling with ultra intense guitar works." 20th Century Guitar[citation needed]
  • "…Cosmopolitan flair … reminiscent of guitarist Lee Ritenour." JAZZIZ[citation needed]
