In order to obtain the certificate, the candidate needs to pass both the "tronc commun", which is common for all sports, and the "spécifique", which is specific to each particular sport.

This certificate is available for more than 60 sports, including:

There are 3 levels:

  • BEES 1st degree: sport coach
  • BEES 2nd degree: teacher of sport coaches
  • BEES 3rd degree: expert

The requirement for taking the exam are:

  • for the BEES 2nd degree: have the BEES 1st degree for at least 2 years
  • for the BEES 3rd degree: have the BEES 2nd degree for at least 4 years

Public and private organisations provide workshops that prepare students for the exam which is administered by the French Ministry of Sport. These workshops are typically organised in the Sports Regional Centers (Centres régionaux d'éducation physique et sportive - CREPS).

Since 2006, the BEES is going to disappear for most of the sports to be replaced by another type of certificate called professional certificate for sports and education (Brevet professionnel de la jeunesse, de l’éducation populaire et du sport).
