Bredevoort was a separate municipality until 1818, when it became a part of Aalten.[1]

The name Bredevoort is inferred from the word 'Brede'("broad"} and 'Voort' ("ford") a passage in a peat. On the end from the sand back they did build a castle, wich they extended later and eventually developed to a reinforced city. Wich you can still see today by example the bastion they builded windmill "prins van Oranje" on, and a part of the town ditch wich (last friday and saturday of august and the first friday and saterday of september) they keep each year the gondola light festival..
