Not to be confused with Breakfast.
A break fast (two separate words) is a meal that takes places following a fast. While its purpose is to fulfill hunger that has occurred while fasting, in some cases, such as after the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, it is viewed as a festive meal.
Naturally, one may be inclined to overeat during a break fast. But this may be unhealthy. Since the digestive system slows down or sometimes shuts down during fasting, certain foods (such as meat), if eaten immediately following a fast, can be harmful or in extreme cases, deadly. It is better to eat a more moderate amount of lighter foods, such as fruit or yogurt.
