Jacob Rath and the Graveyard By CJ Kelly Not so long ago in a town, not so unlike Normal, Illinois, there was a frightening disturbance. This disastrous deed happened to a boy named Jacob Rath. Jacob was a regular kid, he went to school, got good grades, had lots of friends, and had crushes. If you could pick one person to be described as just plain ordinary than this person would be Jacob Rath. It just so happens that if you said that he was just plain ordinary after his experience then you would be dead wrong. One late October night, the night before Halloween in fact, Jacob and his three friends, Ryan, Joe, and Drew, wanted to see a brand new horror movie called “Vengeance”. However, their parents would not let them see it because of reviews of the movie. Jacob and his friends went out anyway, sneaking out of their houses. If only they had listened to their parents. They all thought they were lucky, nobody else was in the theater. The movie was one of the most terrifying experiences Jacob had witnessed in his life. Since it was a zombie movie, he would never look at graveyards the same again. His friends agreed. Although it seemed like he missed a little part in the middle of the movie. He figured he must have been sleepy. Going outside after the movie he noticed a police officer. “Oh no,” he thought. His father was also a police officer. If he got caught after curfew than the officer would tell his father and he would get grounded for a month. “Come on, let’s take a shortcut,” Jacob whispered. His friends saw the officer and quickly agreed. Going through the streets he thought he saw a familiar street. He beckoned for his friends to follow. As he moved along, he noticed that the streets were turning into dead ends. He turned around. There was a graveyard waiting for him at the end of the street. After seeing “Vengeance” he was unsure of walking through. But he heard footsteps and he quickly obliged to the insane half of him, thus sentencing him to eternal fear. As he walked by the grave stones he looked around. Joe was gone. Jacob quickly submerged into his own fears and ran. He stopped when he heard a scream. He turned around. Drew was gone. Now Jacob was a nervous wreck. He yelled and yelled for help and as he turned around he saw a hand reach up and grab Ryan around the leg. Before Ryan could scream, another hand came up and stifled him. Ryan was dragged underground. Jacob couldn’t believe it. He sprinted as fast as he could. He felt a cold, hungry hand reach around his leg, he couldn’t breath. As he was dragged underground…… Jacob woke up in the theater. Drew was shaking him awake. Jacob sighed. It was only a dream. He and his friends walked out of the theater right to the graveyard.
Ode to Nellie Bly CJ Kelly
There once was a reporter named Nellie Bly, Whose tongue was as sharp as her eye. She wanted a job for the best paper around So she wrote an article to which most would not call sound. She wrote about the mistreated souls, At an asylum whose rumors were all old. She acted crazy you see, Just so the truth would find you and me. She stayed at the asylum for ten days and nights, And she faced many frights, But she found out the truth, That there, they would beat you, because you were not in your youth. So after this dreadful time, She wrote the article so the truth would reach ears of yours and mine.
